Gotland rabbit (gotlandskanin)
In 1977, some rabbit strains that had been kept pure-bred for a very long time were observed on the island of Gotland. The Gotland rabbit, which was the name the breed was given, is one of the most unbred native breeds of rabbit in Sweden. It has its origin from a very old breed, which in technical literature from the beginning of the 20th century generally is named Swedish native rabbit (Svensk lantkanin). The Gotland rabbit is nowadays spread in the southern and central parts of the country and has its origin from about ten holdings on Gotland.
The colour of the Gotland rabbit is quite varying. Single-coloured and speckled individuals are common. White individuals with few markings usually have coloured muzzle or ears, and are sometimes coloured around the eyes and along the back. The Gotland rabbit is known for its hardiness, easy deliveries and good health. The average weight is about 3,5 kg.
The society "the Gotland Rabbit" (Gotlandskaninen), was established in 1984 with the purpose of preserving and spreading knowledge about the breed and of increasing the number of animals. At the request of the Swedish Board of Agriculture, an inventory was performed in 1993-94. A gene bank was also established, and in 1995 there were 50 gene bank holdings with a total of some 200 breeding animals.
